Being a mom is the most beautiful and rewarding experience. Still, I think we can all agree it comes with its fair share of challenges. Sleepless nights are one hurdle that can test any mama’s patience and well-being. If you are in the thick of it with your babe and hanging on to your sanity by a thread, this post is for you. By incorporating mindfulness into this sacred bonding time, moms can transform these tearful moments into peaceful and even rejuvenating experiences. Here are a few quick tips to help you survive sleepless nights with your newborn!
Tips to Survive Sleepless Nights with Your Newborn
Set the Stage
The first step to surviving sleepless nights with your newborn is to set the stage. Creating an environment you love is essential for surviving those sleepless nights with your new baby. Wherever you will be feeding your babe, make it as cozy as possible. Dim the lights, grab your favorite blanket and a glass of water (my 40oz Stanley was an absolute lifesaver for me!), and adjust the room temperature to provide a comfortable and cozy atmosphere for you and your little one. Preparing the space will allow your mind to settle into a calm state and enhance the overall experience.
Some of my nursery faves are:
- Hatch sound machine! There are so many great sounds and colors to help you and your babe relax into sleep. It is the perfect night light to feed your love without turning the lights on.
Pro Tip: Use the schedule feature to help define a good sleep routine!
- Shark 3-in-1 Air Purifier. This baby has been ideal for ensuring the air quality in the nursery is excellent and keeping the room at the perfect temperature all year round.
- Frida Baby Humidifier. Perfect for keeping moisture in the air. Plus, it doubles as a diffuser, so you can use the power of scent to create a peaceful sleep setting.
- Of course, the coziest blanket to snuggle up in! This Barefoot Dreams dupe is my absolute favorite. So soft and cozy.
Center Yourself with Breath:
No feeling on earth is better than a mom’s connection to her baby. As far as your baby is concerned, you are one human. That is important to remember when you consider your breath. It anchors not only your state of mind but your little ones’, too. As you sit down for the feeding, take a few moments to ground yourself. Close your eyes, relax your shoulders, and focus on your breath. Concentrate on the sensation of inhaling and exhaling, allowing it to anchor your attention. Deep breathing techniques can help you enter a state of relaxation and let go of any residual stress or tension.
Do you struggle to get your baby to calm down at night?
Try This: When you pick your baby up to console them, try slowing your breathing and visualizing your calm, loving energy transferring to them through your breath. Be patient, this may not work immediately, but the calmer you are the more likely your baby is to calm down.
Engage Your Senses:
Fully engage your senses in the present moment and immerse yourself in the experience of feeding your baby. Listen to the sound of their precious breath, observe their tiny hands as they grab yours, and feel the comforting warmth of their body against yours. Mindfulness involves acknowledging and appreciating these subtle sensations, allowing you to forge a strong connection with your little one.
Cultivate Gratitude:
During those quiet hours, take a moment to express gratitude for this special time with your child. Recognize the gift of being able to nurture and nourish them. Practicing gratitude shifts your perspective and helps maintain a positive mindset, even when exhaustion creeps in.
Practice Self-Compassion:
Remember to extend your mindfulness practice towards self-compassion. It’s natural to feel drained during those middle-of-the-night feedings. Still, by treating yourself kindly, you’ll cultivate inner strength and resilience. Encourage yourself, remind yourself that you’re doing a fantastic job, and let any negative thoughts quietly pass.
Embrace Mindful Feeding:
Being present for your baby’s feeding can be an enriching experience. Observe their behaviors, facial expressions, and how they respond to nurturing. This level of attentiveness allows you to better understand their needs, fostering a deeper connection. You can create a nurturing and focused environment by avoiding distractions like smartphones.
The most important thing to remember is that this is temporary. There are two ways to view this. First, this, too, shall pass. Nothing in this life is permanent, so remind yourself to ride the wave rather than dwell on the frustration and exhaustion. It won’t last forever. Second, that sweet little baby in your arms will only be that little for so long. Soak in the snuggles while you can. Oh and don’t forget you are an absolutely amazing mama who is doing everything in her power to nourish the beautiful life or lives you have created. I am proud of you!
By incorporating mindfulness into your late-night feedings, you can transform these tiresome moments into cherished opportunities for self-care, connection, and growth. Engaging your senses, practicing gratitude, and cultivating self-compassion will enhance your bond with your little one and support your well-being. Embrace the beauty of these quiet moments, and may your journey as a mindful mother be filled with love, joy, and tranquillity. You are ready to survive the sleepless nights with your newborn. YOU GOT THIS!
